NDSCS Wahpeton | Old Main Renovation & IT Relocation

MJBA’s focus on restoring and preserving historic buildings has led to many projects collaborating with local colleges. If you’ve ever passed NDSCS’s Wahpeton campus, you’ve likely seen the large “S” adorning the roof of the Old Main building. Old Main was constructed in 1891 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. A few modifications have been made over the years, and as a result, many ongoing deficiencies need to be addressed and resolved, such as ADA, a faulty roof, and deferred maintenance. The renovation project consisted of demolishing the elevator/stairwell addition and remodeling the interior of the building to provide multi-functional classrooms, offices, student services, and a new third-floor multi-purpose classroom. MJBA conducted a pre-design in 2010 and updated the cost estimate in 2011. The Campus I.T. Hub was relocated, and Burch and Hektner Halls were demolished as part of this project. Remodel work was not limited to inside the building. The distinguishing “S” and the new roof were two parts of a restoration project undertaken by MJBA to maintain the exterior. The S was given new lighting, and the antiquated Three-Tab shingles were replaced with new, wind-resistant ones while keeping the distinguished, aged look. The masonry, as well as the downspouts and gutters, were also restored and repaired.
